poster.jpg (54303 bytes)  Peter Pan was the first new full-length story ballet created by David Wilcox in seven years.  The ballet followed the most popular story line and featured our students in many wonderful and fantastic roles.  Accompanying the ballet Peter Pan were the following dances:

Les Sylphides is one of the world’s great classical ballets, challenging the technique and quality of our upper level students.

Aymara, a unique and spirited dance by Helen Coope was first choreographed for the Long Beach Ballet in 1985 and has since been performed numerous times.  Always a crowd pleaser, it features Peruvian flute music by Inti Illimanian.

The rousing pas de deux from Don Quixote exemplifies the best of bravura classical ballet and provides a perfect device for dancers to display their favorite and most exciting “tricks.”

We thank all of our students and parents for their enthusiastic participation.

Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote
Music by Leon Minkus Choreography after Marius Petipa Staged by David Wilcox

This variation from the full length ballet Don Quixote is probably the most performed ballet piece in the world. It is commonly performed at international ballet competitions because of it’s emphasis on the “bravura” style of both the male and the female dancer, not to mention it’s rousing music.

Aymara
Music by Inti Illimani Choreography by Helen Coope Staged by Shani Englert

Choreographed originally for the Long Beach Ballet in 1985, Aymara became an audience favorite for 12 years and was performed at the Long Beach Terrace Theater, Center Theater, and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. It’s airy Peruvian reed music and unique style depict the joyous and colorful dancing
of the folks people of the region.

Les Sylphides

Premiere: June 2, 1909, (Theatre du Chatelet, Paris)
Music by Frederic Chopin Choreography by Michael Fokine Staged by Shani Englert

Synopsis: The ballet has no plot, that is why there is no scenario credit. It is "romantic reverie." Les Sylphides is composed of a suite of dances in the romantic atmosphere of a moonlit park. The sylphides, (magical figures, like the sylph in La Sylphide), dance with the "poet" in search of the ideal. The dances are in the following order: 1. Prelude: The curtain rises and all dancers are on stage, posed motionless. 2. Nocturne: an ensemble danced by the whole cast. 3. Waltz: a solo variation performed by a soloist. 4. Mazurka: a solo by the prima ballerina. 5. Mazurka: a solo by the lone male dancer in the cast. 6. Prelude: a solo by a different soloist. 7. Waltz pas de deux for the prima ballerina and the poet. 8. Grand Waltz: the final ensemble.
