BREAKING NEWS!
Long Beach Ballet
Company members performed beautifully for the RDA Adjudicator on
Monday, March 17th. She selected three pieces to be performed at the
Festival in May. Long Beach Ballet will
be one of only two RDA companies that will perform three ballets during
the three-day festival. Long Beach Ballet will open the festival
Thursday evening with "Cheek to Cheek," choreographed by Rebecca Thompson
and accompanied by live jazz band. The Saturday evening performance
will include a fun new work by Christina Jones titled "Walk Away," then we
will close the festival with Johnny Zhong's "Yin Yang."
Congratulations to the dancers of the Long Beach Ballet and we look
forward to an amazing ballet festival!
40 Long Beach Ballet Academy students competed in
the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) semi-finals last weekend.
The panel of prestigious judges included Martin van Hamel, former
principal ballerina of American Ballet Theater.
Academy Level 4 performed a new piece
called "Querer." This was their first involvement with a ballet
competition. Academy Levels 5 and 6 performed two group dances and
several solo numbers. The two group dances were "Legions" by Johnny
Zhong, and "O-kay" by Rebecca Thompson.
Both group dances received an equal score
from the panel of judges (93 out of 100) and we were accepted to the finals
in New York City in April. This was the first time so many Long
Beach Ballet students have participated in YAGP and the first time that we
have presented group dances.
Congratulations to the beautiful dancers of
the Long Beach Ballet. (Quoting one of the judges (former Bolshoi Ballet
dancer Mikhail Tchoupakov): "Strong dancers ... good energy!"

was was a lot of fun for everyone, with live Bavarian band, too much food,
and great new games for everyone to play. Special congratulations to
Paige White who won the $1,000.00 cash prize. She said "I really
didn't expect to win anything. I bought the 50 raffle tickets solely
to support the Long Beach Ballet!" (That's probably why she won.)
