Up-To-Date Information
A six week program from July 1st to August 13th, 2008, beginning
with four weeks in Long Beach, CA, studying
with master teachers, choreographers and coaches, and culminating in a two
week performing tour in China during the 2008 Olympic Games
The
Long Beach Ballet, under the artistic direction of David Wilcox, has been
asked to assemble a group of passionate, talented, advanced level ballet
students to represent the U.S. in China during the Olympics. This select
group of United States Ballet Ambassadors is being formed in cooperation
with the National Ballet of China in Guangzhou, the local Chinese
governments of Guangdong and Liaoning, theatrical agents in Beijing, and
under the administrative guidance of American Tour Management
International.
Thirty-five
dancers will be selected for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. All
dancers will receive complimentary round trip airfare to China. Auditions
will be conducted in January by Long Beach Ballet Artistic Director David
Wilcox. Please see below for detailed program information and audition dates and times.
David Wilcox has been selected for this unique honor by Chinese
representatives due to his extensive ties with the ballet world in China.
The only American choreographer to have staged three full- length ballets
on Chinese companies, David Wilcox has also produced six ballet tours to
China with American ballet dancers, most recently in August of 2006, with
his successful production of “Ballet American Style,”
(link) which was received by the local audiences in Guangzhou with
grateful enthusiasm. A limited number of spaces are available for family
members on the two week China tour.

Travel
and hotels in China during the 2008 China Olympics will be prohibitively expensive
for the average American citizen. However, American Tour Management
International has been able to secure cooperation and assistance from the
Chinese government and will provide complimentary round trip airfare to
China for those dancers selected for the tour. Discounted airfare will be
provided for accompanying family members.
ATMI has managed many performing tours to China over the years, each of
them memorable and exciting in its own way, but none with such
“once-in-a-lifetime” implications as this. The 2008 Ballet
Ambassadors to China is certainly a milestone event for the U.S.
dance world, especially as it coincides with what will be the grandest
Olympic Games in history. As David Wilcox declares, "The people of China
love Americans, and our dancers have always been treated like royalty."

Student and Parent comments
from previous Long Beach Ballet Summer Programs...
“My
daughter had the most incredible experience at your summer program.
She came away with an increased love for ballet, said she had never
worked so hard, but had a ton of fun at the same time!
Your faculty was all wonderful, and the final performance was so
completely professional that I will recommend this program to everyone I
know. Thank
you!"
--Sarah Winston (mother of Jane Winston)
"Thank
you all for making Stefanie's experience at camp a fun, exciting, and
rewarding 5 weeks! She enjoyed the nice mix of instructors and
courses that were given, and whenever she had a question while she was
there, there was someone willing to find an answer. Visiting during
the last week of camp, it was fun to be able to see what the girls (and
boys!) had been experiencing, and I felt welcome by the staff at Long
Beach Ballet Arts Center. Thank you again for an enriching
experience in Summer 2000!"
--Susan
Seamens (mother of Stefanie Seamen)
"I
hope this finds you all in Long Beach well and happy. I think of you
all very often and there aren't too many days that go by that I don't
think about my wonderful experience this past summer. Not only do I
feel that I was really able to grow and mature as a dancer, thanks to your
program, but I came home with fantastic memories and great new
friendships which I will never forget. I came home just SO
encouraged about my dancing! I hope to be able to participate again
this summer and spend 5 of the best weeks of my life with you all."
--Giulia
Carotenuto (from Rome, Italy)
"I
I just wanted to say a great big thank-you for making my daughter's
summer so incredible! She came home so happy and with a
new-found self confidence that is jut fabulous! We hope she can
come again next year!"
--Dana
Denison
"I
would like to take this opportunity to compliment you on your summer
program. It is rare for some teen aged students to be expressive
about their experiences in classes. It is more typical to get
the "How was school today?" "Fine"
type of conversations from them. So, if Kitri rhapsodizes about
how much she liked her teachers in Long Beach, THAT is very
unusual! I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and I was
impressed by the few classes I was able to observe. I was struck
by the friendliness of the teachers as well."
--Priscilla J. Hancock, M.D.
